Monta Loma Elementary School

Art Shows are a very special experience for students parents teachers and the District. Our art shows are a bursting display for Arts Advocacy! 

Absolutely beautiful turn out in the Library at Monta Loma. Special thanks to my MOM Brooke Miller, and the librarian Linda for letting us use the space!

This show truely exhibits the quality of the Art4Schools program and the true learning experience of these children. 

Art Star Awards

For the last day of the 16 week program, I had the students put their names on the artwork I chose for them to put in the End of Year Art Show. We then put our artworks up on the whiteboard, for a little "Art Star" Awards Ceremony.

Archimboldo: Veggie Self-Portraits

I have been wanting to do a lesson using Giuseppe Archimboldo's fantastic, odd, modge-podge, surreal portraits forever! I think this artist is fantastic for kids to experiment with in the art room.

Cezanne Still Life Collage

3rd grade should be introduced to not only shapes, but how shapes are 3-dimensional forms. I got this idea, again, from my fabulous colleague who did a similar lesson with her Art Club.

Pinch Pot Fish

So it is my first year teaching ceramics, and I saw a bunch of ideas for animals with a pinch pot as the body. Super cute idea, not too hard... (for me to instruct at least). I did this with all 4 of my 3rd grade classes (roughly 100 kids + 1 Special Needs class - some pieces not pictured).

Beijing Opera Masks

Who would you be if you could represent yourself differently? A villain? A King? Would you be mischievous or loyal? How can we look at the masks worn in the Beijing Opera for inspiration? Why are masks worn? How does a viewer react to a mask? What makes for a strong reaction? This lesson is a preparatory lesson for my 4th grade class, as they will be learning about Asian music through the program I work for, in the 2nd half of their school year coming up in January 2013.

Mehndi Hands

The tradition of Mehndi is used in India and other Eastern traditions, usually done to women's hands during their rite of passage into marriage.

Fantasy Jungles

Imagine...What it would be like to be an ant walking through a jungle? Huge plants and leaves all around you. Carnivorous plants maybe, hmmmm. What's the weather like in your fantasy? Nighttime, raining, storming, lightening?

Lets make our lesson about Shapes, symmetrical shapes, asymmetrical shapes and patterns FUN.

Self-Portrait: The Animal Within

This self-portrait lesson taught the proportions of our face, wile also rendering ourselves as the "animal within".

Cubist Guitars

Music is Art! The non-profit I work for, Community School of Music and Arts, also teaches Music to schools, along with art, for 1/2 of the year. Some students in this class are taking music right now, and I taught this lesson on a Friday (not the usual day), so the students who take music, joined the rest of the class for fun art making!

Fall Contour Leaves #2

My Special Day class did a great job looking at the contours of Fall leaves I brought for them for a contour lesson.

Adinkra Cloth Printmaking

Kids love to do printmaking...To see the transformation from their hand-drawn symbol design on foam sheets, to the print it makes using black tempura, it's just fun AND academic all in one project.

Arcimboldo Self-Portraits

Expressive Self-Portraits

First year teaching self-portraits ain't so bad...Especially if you show them the proportions of the face and where to put your facial features. Intimidated at first, I was astonished with the turnout of these portraits!

Lighthouses

Did you know the very first lighthouse was built in Alexandria, Egypt? It was called the Pharos of Alexandria and it was the tallest building in our history. At the top of this structure, a lantern with a giant bonfire whose light may have been focused by mirrors, perhaps made of polished bronze, radiated light about 300 miles out into the sea. It took 300 Slaves to build this lighthouse, and 17 years of labor. Sadly, it was completely destroyed in an earthquake.

Contour Shoes!

Take off your shoe...(laughter, giggling, smelly feet)...put it on the table. Have your partner cover your paper so you cannot look...and draw a Blind Contour of your shoe for 5 minutes. This is how we started this lesson - to see how doing a Blind Contour actually forces your eye to look harder at the lines you are following with your eye, because you cannot see them as you draw them.

Edward Curtis Tee Pee Landscapes

4th grade learns about Native America! My favorite subject in grade school...Our 2nd study on value, and also contour, I thought Edward Curtis would be so perfect with his gold tone sepia photographs of native people, their environment and daily lives.

Cityscapes At Night

Teaching about value (bright or darkness of a color), is probably one of my favorite lessons to teach because it is one of the most iomportant fundamentals in art. Knowing about value, value change, and how light sources and time of day affect value, an artist will be able to make something structurally 3D, or appear to be. Value also gives comprehension to form or composition, and can also have implied symbolism.

Santa Clara Audubon Society Poster Contest - Burrowing Owl

The Santa Clara Audubon Society has a poster contest for their Education Day every year. I was given the flyer for this project and immediately knew I wanted my students to participate, because it will not only be educational, and raise awareness about threatened species in our County, but it will be FUN! It is a great opportunity for the classes to bond with each other and appreciate facets of nature that could use our help!
