Pysanky Egg Paintings

Art Club gathers for art, stories and the tradition of beautifully painted eggs.
In light of Easter Sunday just around the corner, the children and I read the book, Rechenka's Eggs written by Patricia Polacco. The book takes place in Russia, where a Russian woman paints eggs for a festival, and runs into a predicament when an unexpected guest (a goose) breaks all of her painted eggs for the festival. The goose lays beautifully painted eggs, and saves the day.

The focus of this Art Club class, was the Ukranian tradition of painting hollowed eggs, as a symbol of Spring. The book provided fun folk-lore and visual inspiration.

We used oil resist method for this project - meaning drawing with oil pastel, and then water color on top. Many children enjoyed using the white pastel, and drawing a basket of eggs, just like the illustrations in the book.
