Da Vinci Self-Portraits

5th grade takes a look at Leonardo da Vinci's classical portraiture techniques to draw a portrait of themselves using chalk pastel.

It's important to learn the proportions of our faces! Once we can see the basic 3-Dimenstional form of our heads, where to place our eyes, ears, nose mouth we can make a portrait look realistic! Our class started off by drawing these proportions with a handheld mirror and pencil.

Week 2, we added white to show where the light is hitting our face, and chose a darker pastel to show the shadow, where the light cannot reach. We looked at all of the very minute shadows on our faces like under our noses and lips, above our eye lids and around the teardrop part of our eye sockets.

Some students chose a pair of colors to symbolize who they are and used the warm color for the highlight and the cool color for the shadowing.

Really amazing work they look like my students!! This is a difficult, multi-step project so way to go 5th grade!
