Navajo Sand Painting

The Winter Art Club, "A World of Art" started this past week. We looked at the patterns and symbolisms used in Navajo Indian sand paintings and weavings.

We started off by discussing the "kinds of lines and shapes" we saw in the pictures of the Navajo Art I brought for the classes - and we all contributed to a chart on the whiteboard.

Students then used chalk pastel on 8.5 X 11" sand paper to draw either a Navajo Rug or a traditional sand painting.

This was a really great simple project that tied into some important art concepts including like, shape, symmetry, symbolism and multi-cultural awareness. Plus, the kids loved using the sandpaper!
