5th grade learns about artist Keith Haring. We are doing this project in 2 parts. This first part resembles Haring's subway drawings on black paper.
This lesson was adapted by CSMA's very own Judy Schultz! Thank you Judy!We first talked about contour line, and how Haring's contour line figures must have stood out dramatically, when next to other advertisements in the subway. I showed them photographs of Haring's "graffiti" stage . Below are some examples.
We talked about the energy and feelings we get when we look at his artwork, especially the "movement lines", and what, perhaps, were Haring's motives behind his artistic style.
Everyone got a laminated square of Haring's work - in color. The challenge was to draw 4 of these, in 5 minutes each using white chalk. Paying close attention to the small amount of space they have before starting their compositions.
Since 5th grade and 4th grade get 1.5 hours, the 2nd stage is using color oil pastel on 6"x6" variety-colored construction paper to draw, again their figures. Noticing Haring's limited palette, why he kept it limited, how that contributes to how viewers might feel when looking at his work. STAY TUNED for the colored artwork!
