Wild Cat Silhouette Landscapes

A lesson on shape, my small 5th grade class voted on what subject matter to do for this lesson. Wild cats, cats, cats! and more cats. So I modified a lesson to make them excited about this project.

Timid at first, students quickly learned about foreground, middle ground and background, and how the values of these 3 spaces change given the depth of a landscape perspective. Cutting the black silhouette was hard for students. Using scissors to cut in between large shapes isn't the "optimal" utensil - I would recommend Xacto knives on cardboard...I think the students would have cut more negative spaces out of their shapes with Xacto Knives. But they did a good job and will look fantastic for the art show!
