California Native Plants

4th Grade
Monta Loma Elementary School
Mountain View, California

Introducing the 4th Grade to Contour drawings of Native Plants of California ties in with the 4th grade curriculum of California History.

Working from a handout, students worked slowly first with pencil to get the basic contour of their plant on paper. Then went over it with fine tip sharpie, and added textures within the contour to define further their plant.

Many students had images that were very "busy", with many stems of flowers and leaves. This felt overwhelming to some, so I invited the idea of just looking at the basic shapes that are the flowers and leaves, drawing those on paper, then later going back to fine-tune them. Another option was to fold the image in 1/2, this really helped, too. (click to enlarge!)
