As Summer Time rolls in, the "Birds" unit comes to a close with these fabulous bird sketches.
Children love to just use pencil and colored pencil. They have the most practice with these materials in their classrooms and at home. I passed out some calendar photographs of various birds including raptors, ducks, etc. to the children, along with a tan colored 13x19" construction paper, a graphite pencil and a set of colored pencils.
I circulated around the room, helping children get started on their drawings. I helped students gauge the proportion of their drawings and scale them onto their papers. I also demonstrated how to draw large ovals for the bodies and circled for the heads, THEN to follow the edge of the form that you see in the photograph, to draw the edges of the bird.
Once the children were done drawing with the pencil, I went around and double checked their drawings and made adjustments with the children, if they wanted help.
Colored pencil was fun. I demonstrated how to make grey - layering white and black in different amounts and with different weights of stroke, depending on how "grey" you need the color. Layering yellow with browns, blues, lots of fantastic techniques were learned today! Enjoy these.
