LINES UNDERGROUND

3rd grade uses their imaginations to draw layers of the earth, using symbolic lines, and different weights of line.

Students could choose a special place to be the setting of their drawing: it could be in a city, in your backyard, in an old Indian Village. What would you find if you dug, and dug, and dug? Arrowheads? Pipes? Underground burrowing animals? Fossils? Bones? We came up with lots of ideas. We tried to incorporate these ideas into the layers of the earth, using them in a pattern by repeating them. We also brainstormed different ways to represent the rock & sediment layers of the earth using various line patterns: curvy, crooked, wavy, dotted, you name it.

The inspiration for the tree was Gustav Klimpt's "Tree of Life".
