Ceramics: Mayan Calendars!

5th graders were fascinated with Mayan Astrology back around Dec 21 2012. Apparently they were making a Mayan City as a lunchtime project (not sure about the details). I originally had planned to do Picasso Plates - but these are WAY more cool!

We decided to draw Quatzequatel in the center of our plaque. I did a guided drawing on the board to help them. We then learned about the Mayan Numerical System and how it differentiates from ours. We used these symbols to carve into the borders of our plaques to represent our modern day clock.

After firing, We used brown tempura, and a damp sponge to pretend like we had "discovered" these like archaeologists in the ground. Then they could choose to go over these details with black paint or other colors like red, yellow, green and I even brought GOLD tempura ! ooOO! Fun. Thanks Jessica Cox at Castro for this request!
