This is a great project for a lesson primitive culture and how they visually expressed themselves and their surroundings. Often using motifs and symbolism, historical cave paintings emulate both earthly and cosmic realms. This lesson can be supplemented with a slideshow of cave paintings of your choice. Here students used, first round, (low quality) chalk pastel on newsprint and the second round was the same chalk pastel on black paper.
Another method to try would be to have the students either crumple brown butcher paper then press flat and use higher quality chalk pastels OR paint white 12 X 18" paper with COFFEE! This gives an antique, aged look to the paper.
