St. Basil's Cathedral - Oil Pastel

Our last art class at the Ladera Rec focuses on St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia.
We started by looking at a photograph of the Cathedral. The buildings are shaped as a flame of a bonfire rising into the sky. We also called them "onion domes". The design has no parallel in Russian Architecture, and in the Byzantine millennium. It is an unexpected, complex and dazzling cathedral. And also fun to draw.

The children first glued 4 white strips around the edges of the navy blue construction paper. Then we drew the outlines of 8 structures, making sure to overlap the shapes. Children at this point, were inspired by the provided photograph, and used the oil pastels to design their own St. Basil's Cathedral. Lots of fun line patterns and shapes.
