LIFE SIZE Sarcophagi!

ART CLUB takes the scale to LIFE SIZE. Working in table groups, students learned about the cultural significance and purpose of these Egyptian Coffins AND also practicing teamwork by communicating with each other affectively and fairly as a team!

This project was a massive amount of fun for my Art Clubbers :) Kids are always so intrigued by Egyptian Art, the pyramids, the tombs, the hieroglyphic writing, the afterlife...but better yet, GOLD PAINT & PASTELS!!

Each table group was asked to talk amongst each other and figure out who's birthday was the closest to this day. That person was the "Mummy". They took their shoes off and "assumed the mummy position" by laying on the table stiff as can be. The "tracers" traced around the mummy, but not too close! Remember it's a coffin! Looking at the shape of the pictures I brought, how they do not contour the shape of the body, "tracers" drew with pencil and then black pen.

Those who are good are drawing line patterns and coloring could start decorating the lower coffin. Those in charge of the face were confident with their proportioning skills, and those who drew the hands also.

After the initial layout was drawn everyone contributed their artistic vision to the Sarcophagus. It was a really great opportunity for them to delegate tasks and configure ideas as a group.

At the end I brought out the gold metallic acrylic and these phenomenal gold pastels I spent some extra money on awhile back. These pastels are extravagantly shimmery.

Next session we will make a Cartouche with our names written with the hieroglyphic alphabet on Scratch Foam and stamp it with gold acrylic onto the outside. This "guarantees" the transport to the afterlife.
