Students were given a calendar page from various calendars that my Mom had saved. We used oil pastel to start drawing the figures of the bird. I gave a brief demo on how to "build a figure" using basic shapes, to start. The body might be an oval, and the head is a circle. From there, you can fine tune the edges of the form. Children were given all 6 colors of the wheel and just went to town paintings their birds. We used Jazz tempura paint which has a glossy finish.
