California Missions - Van Gogh Style

4th Grade tears paper to "build" a CA Mission while recognizing geometric and organic shapes. We learned how to draw a landscape in the impasto style of Vincent Van Gogh.

This lesson was a great way to introduce the California Missions to the 4th graders. I gave a demonstration on how to "break apart" the shapes that make up the mission handouts they were given, and then how to control their tearing by pinching with their thumbs and index fingers. Students had the choice of using 3 different browns, which could be used by their choice for roofs, windows, bells and archways.

Phase 2 was looking at calendar images I brought of Van Gogh's Trees and landscapes. Each table had a calendar image, in color, to work from. I talked briefly about why Van Gogh uses so many colors with his paints, and how his impasto technique of layering many colors of paint creates a feeling of movement, mood, setting, and energy. We talked about what a "stroke" is, and that every artist has their very own special "stoke". So below you can see all of the young artists' work!
