Calaveras Printmaking

Today November 1st is in Mexican tradition, Day of the Dead. We talked about the Mexican culture of venerating the dead, sugar skulls and the printmaker, Jose Posada.

I introduced students to the fun fun fun process of printmaking using ScratchFoam, dowels, skull templates, black tempura (and jazz) paint, and construction paper.

I cut up some construction paper for borders, brought some sequins and oil pastels, too. Everyone was so thrilled and mesmerized with this project! Look for the ones with cracked skulls, snakes with fangs and a loose eyeball! Creepy stuff. I would recommend it for any age!

My examples (I had to join the fun):
