Complimentary Hot Air Balloons

My 5th grade class at Castro Elementary needed some more practice understanding the color wheel, and how to make tints and shades of tertiary colors with paint.

Everyone drew their hot air balloon with black oil pastel, filled it in with designs. The second class, we started by mixing a warm, tertiary color of choice for the value scale, and made 3 tints and 3 shades of that color.

Then, we all looked on the color wheel, to figure out what the compliment of our color was, and mixed to paint the background with it. We used the awesome Jazz tempura paint, which is vibrant and glossy - no need for smelly gloss spray.

We filled in the balloon with our first warm color, and different values of it, with the paint we had left on our plates. Then we looked one more time at the color wheel. I explained what a "Split Complimentary Color Scheme" is, and we all mixed to paint that color, and add it to the balloon. Some students just kept with 2 colors, but they are absolutely beautiful, and this class is showing great improvements!
