BAROQUE STYLE PORTRAITS

3rd grade uses images of the grandeur, rhythmic and ornamented clothing worn in the Baroque period (c. 1600) as well as examples of elaborate designs used in architecture of this time period to draw a self-portrait of themselves. If you lived in this time period, what would your hat and outfit look like?!

The Baroque period I tried to explain, started in Rome, Italy and through Europe around 1600. It was a style that had an explosive face - it was theatrical and intense, high spirited, ornate, energetic and moving. It was the age of discovery, investigation and progress. Things were new boisterous and dramatic, not static

It was the time of colonization in the Americas, and monarchy when European kings and queens had, "divine rights". Palaces were enormous, built to impress people. They had huge ornate halls and formal gardens laud out in geometric patterns with elaborate fountains.

In Baroque art, there was emphasis on light and color. It had disregard for simple balance and the preference for more complicated compositions. Every surface that artists made whether painting or architecture was decorated with swirls and movement. Forms were curved, S shaped. Ceiling looked like they opened to the sky with people flying upwards towards the heavens. Gold and silver made decorations seem rich and splendid.

Clothing of this time reflected a taste for grandeur. Fabric was richly woven, embroidered and decorated. Dresses were garnished with laves, frills and full skirs. Men's coats, pantaloons and shirts were equally festooned.

Check out how these students drew themselves wearing a Baroque style hat :) If they finished early they could add the curvy moving line patterns to their backgrounds.
